Round Up is the commercial name for glyphosate, an herbicide which allows farmers to spray specially genetically modified (GM) crops - killing the weeds surrounding them and leaving the crops intact. Unfortunately, the glyphosate covers and saturates the crop several times through-out the growth cycle, leaving residue to be absorbed into the plant material.
You may have heard twitterings across the internet lately. Although glyphosate manufactures have insisted since it's emergence in the 70's that it is harmless, a study released last week has re-addressed it's effects in several previously published mice studies, where different cancer types were shown with causation.
As glyphosate use has increased sharply with the development of GM glyphosate-resistant crop varieties it has been detected in air during spraying, in water, and in food. Glyphosate has been detected in the blood and urine of agricultural workers, and found in breast milk of nursing mothers, all indicating absorption.
Anthony Samsel, a former private environmental U.S. government contractor as well as a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists sums it up:
Everyone eating the western diet of food grown, sprayed and desiccated with Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide can expect to find its active ingredient glyphosate in their body. Glyphosate chelates chemical elements important to our existence, disrupts vitamin synthesis and detoxification enzymes like glutathione and CYP 450 enzymes, as well as many essential amino acids.
Glyphosate is an antibiotic, capable of killing hundreds of species of bacteria which are directly responsible for our immune function and overall health. It is a chronic toxin, a chemical weapon like no other, which is capable of killing organisms both directly and indirectly. Monsanto’s Roundup-glyphosate based herbicide may in fact be, the most disruptive chemical to our biology and our environment.
These guys are well aware that if you know what you are buying, you won't choose them.
If you put a label on genetically engineered food you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it. - Norman Braksick, president of Asgrow Seed Co., a subsidiary of Monsanto, quoted in the Kansas City Star, March 7, 1994
Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job. - Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications
We can't afford to lose one dollar of business. - One internal memo among thousands of Monsanto documents marked "CONFIDENTIAL: Read and Destroy".
How to avoid adding more Glyphosate to your plate:
Buy whole foods (single ingredient foods) which are Certified Organic.
If you are buying processed, choose non-gmo verified labeled foods. Keep in mind that sugar beets, corn, canola (rape), and soy grown in the country are almost all GM.
Help support GMO labeling.
Boycott brands that fund suppression of consumers right to know what they are eating. These corporations spend MILLIONS to keep consumers in the dark because they know labeling will effect sales.
Grow your own non-GMO variety plants in non-round up treated soil.
If you buy locally - awesome! Talk with your farmer and discuss her growing practices. Is she Round-Up free?
