I cringe every time I see a Febreze commercial where the unsuspecting folks are literally huffing the newly “freshened” Febreze air. Huge smiles and “oh, smells like a field of lavender” comments. Clearly, we know that’s not true. Spray Febreze into a stinky garbage can, and you get a stinky garbage can that smells sort of like artificial lavender. Not only are they vile, but these products are not designed to clean or purify the air in any way. They simply add more chemicals to the air and further deteriorate the air quality.
Be aware that claims of "natural," "green," or "organic" are unregulated and undefined, and typically used for marketing. Products labeled as such are no better for your health or the environment.
I don’t want to just pick on Febreze. Most brands of chemical air "fresheners" are an unnecessary health risk and expense.
There are many better and healthier alternatives available to sweeten the air.
Open a window! Ventilation is key to a clean air environment.
Bring the outdoors in. Plants will help filter the air and remove yucky scents. Plus, they are so nice to look at. Broad green leaf types are most efficient.
Stay up to date. Be sure to change your air duct and vacuum filters on a regular schedule.
Simmer herbs such as clove, cinnamon, lavender, mint, rosemary... get creative with your combinations!
Diffuse Essential Oils. Many essential oils and essential oil blends will purify the air as well as smell yummy. Be sure to use pure oils such as Young Living or DoTerra brands to avoid added chemicals*
Make your own spray. If you really love the idea of getting right at the problem area and spraying it down, not to worry! You can still make your own sprays using essential oils!
